Nordic Campus Leeuwarden
Nordic Campus is the (general) claim for NHL Stenden. But what does that mean for the university's various locations, the "Olympic host cities"? Read about our Olympic Games metaphor here
For example, how will Leeuwarden distinguish itself from the other locations while, 'despite' that distinction, it also has to be recognized as an NHL Stenden location?
Research has been conducted into the Genius Loci/identity of Leeuwarden and Friesland. The focus is on history, language, culture, and even the flag. An inventory was also made of iconic businesses, buildings, crafts, products, natural landscapes, and events. All highlights relevant to the campus's development have been identified. Sometimes they were used literally, sometimes (later) in a modern interpretation. These are things that truly distinguish them.
The research into identity, trends and developments led to the following unique claim (Marketing Landscape) for NHL Stenden Leeuwarden location:
“Helping each other and the community move forward (and therefore also yourself) “
Community: This isn't about egos…
The Frisian fundamental attitude is: If the community is doing well, you're doing well too. Contributing to the environment is practically a given. These have therefore become the guiding principles for the campus's development:
- The Genius Loci/identity of the surrounding area is, just like at ALL other NHL Stenden Nordic Campuses, very much in evidence. Students here must feel, know, and see that they are in Leeuwarden/Friesland. This is also literally visible on campus.
- The campus makes use of the differences between
the seasons. - Friesland's community (Mienskip) is paramount on this campus. During the concept development phase, careful consideration must be given to how this can be made tangible in the public spaces. How can we give it meaning in terms of programming? How can we ensure that students themselves contribute to making the campus enjoyable? We let them do a lot themselves.
- Residents, companies, employees and students should be proud of their unique Frisian campus.
- Students should be inspired to explore Leeuwarden and Friesland. They should be curious about culture, sights, food, and drinks. They should also be interested in Frisian businesses, so they might stick around after their studies. The campus entices students to explore the province.
- Students from home and abroad should be able to take home positive and inspiring stories about Leeuwarden and Friesland. The storytelling on campus needs to be strong (and so should the experiences they've had in Leeuwarden and the province).
